The FOIAXpress page file types available are grouped under two categories: image and non-image files. Image files contain information relating to the pixels that comprise a graphic image.
File Type | Extension | Icon | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
JPG or JPEG | JPG/JPEG |
| A compressed true-color or high-color bitmap format, developed by the Joint Photographic Experts Group of the International Standards Organization. JPEG is used for photographic images. This is a common image format used with Web pages. Low-resolution image file image format frequently used on electronic media, such as web pages, e-mail, and other forms of on-screen display. JPG resolution can exceed the standard 72 pixels-per-inch of GIF files, but are generally not used for print media. |
Single/Multi Page TIFF | TIF/TIFF |
| High-resolution image file. TIFF files can be set to any amount of dots-per-inch or dpi. The greater the dpi, the better resolution and larger the file. The standard FOIAXpress TIFF image resolution is 300 dpi. TIFF files are generally not used for electronic media, but are excellent for print-quality material. |
Single/Multi-Page PDF |
| Adobe® Portable Document Format (PDF) is the open de facto standard for electronic document distribution. It is a universal file format that preserves all fonts, formatting, graphics, and color of any source document, regardless of the application and platform used to create it. Adobe PDF files are compact and can be shared, viewed, navigated, and printed exactly as they are with the Acrobat Reader. You also have the ability to adjust the DPI for PDF files from 75-300 DPI. | |
Native Format | Depends on the program used to process/prepare documentation | Depends on the program used to process/prepare documentation | Any file type that is supported by FOIAXpress, including .doc, .docx, .xls, .xlsx, .ppt, .pptx, .msg, .txt, .rtf, vsd, .vsdx, .jpg, .tif, .htm, .html, and pdf. Redactions cannot be drawn with any file type other than TIFF, PDF and JPG. Additionally, if the .msg file contains attachments, the attachments must be in a supported file type or ZIP format. |
Comma Separated Value | CSV |
| CSV files store tabular data (numbers and text) in plain text. Each line of the file is a data record. Each record consists of one or more fields, separated by commas. The use of the comma as a field separator is the source of the name for this file format. |
Portable Network Graphics | PNG |
| The Portable Network Graphics (PNG) format was designed to replace the older and simpler GIF format and, to some extent, the much more complex TIFF format. ... For the Web, PNG really has three main advantages over GIF: alpha channels (variable transparency), gamma correction (cross-platform control of image brightness), and two-dimensional interlacing (a method of progressive display). PNG also compresses better than GIF in almost every case, but the difference is generally only around 5% to 25%, not a large enough factor to encourage a switch on that basis alone. One GIF feature that PNG does not try to reproduce is multiple-image support, especially animations; PNG was and is intended to be a single-image format only. |
